Brutal Truth Revealed: 2025 Land Cuts—and How to Fight Back

Whether you’re a weekend hiker, a family that loves camping trips, or a full-time RVer chasing sunsets, chances are you’ve built some of your best memories on public lands. National parks, state parks, national forests, and BLM land are part of the American outdoor experience—and in 2025, they’re under real pressure.

This year, major budget cuts, staff reductions, and even proposals to sell off federal lands have sparked concern across the outdoor community. If you love nature, this is your moment to lean in and speak up.

What’s Going On With Public Land Funding?

In early 2025, the federal government passed a spending bill that cut the National Park Service budget by $210 million. As a result:

  • The Park Service has lost over 1,000 employees in just two months
  • Visitor centers, restrooms, and campgrounds are closing or reducing hours
  • Maintenance delays and staffing shortages are stretching thin the services we rely on when visiting wild places

Who’s Affected by Public Land Funding Cuts?

This isn’t just about RVers and backpackers—it’s about everyone who enjoys the outdoors:

  • Day hikers and trail runners will find trail closures and fewer rangers on site
  • Campers may run into full or shuttered campgrounds with no services
  • RVers relying on public lands for paid campgrounds or dispersed camping may lose affordable camping options
  • Families visiting National Parks or other public federally-run parks for spring break or summer road trips may experience reduced access or degraded facilities

Public lands belong to all of us. These changes could reshape how we access, enjoy, and preserve them for years to come.

The Land Sale Proposals

In addition to budget cuts, there are now proposals in Congress to sell off federal land to help fund other political agendas. This includes BLM land and even parts of national forests used by outdoor lovers every day.

This initiative is tied to “Project 2025”, which includes a push for fewer environmental protections and more privatization for increased logging, drilling and even development.

What You Can Do to Help

Good news: people are already taking action. A 2025 poll found that two-thirds of Republicans and a majority of Americans oppose these cuts and land sale plans.

Here’s how you can help protect the places we all love:

  • Contact your elected officials—let them know public lands matter to you (A great app to help with this is 5Calls – available for free on your app store)
  • Support organizations like the Outdoor Alliance (outdooralliance.org) and NPCA (npca.org)
  • Share this blog and start the conversation on social media
  • Visit responsibly and follow Leave No Trace to reduce strain on under-resourced lands.

Final Thoughts

Public lands are more than just pretty places—they’re vital to our mental health, family traditions, outdoor recreation, and the environment. No matter how often you visit, or how you travel, you’re part of a community that depends on these spaces staying open, accessible, and protected.

Now’s the time to speak up for the trails, forests, campgrounds, and wild places that speak to us.
